The Writers Craft
There are lots of resources out there to help new writers. You will find the best of these listed here. Some websites offer free signposting and information and others are trying to sell you something. Newbattle Writers does not endorse any of these businesses or the services which they offer. We do not host pop-ups, banners or website advertising and we do not receive any money from click-through or affiliate programmes operated by any of the on-line businesses which we might list from time-to-time. As a consequence this website might cease to exist when our funding runs out. Donations are very welcome.
The suggestion to start a Writers Group first came from Catrina McGillivray who teaches creative writing at Newbattle Abbey College. She encouraged us to meet regularly and review our work. We have used the following guidelines in our meetings:-
Each writer will bring some work to read out loud to the groupEach writer is allowed to read their work without interuptionAfter the work has been read the writer takes notes and does not participate in the review of their workThe other group members discuss and review the work which has just been read outThe discussion confines itself to non-judgemental comment such as: What was interesting? What thoughts or images were evoked? How was the work structured?The intention is to provide the writer with useful feedback about how listeners experienced their workThe ethos of the writers group is supportive, encouraging and stimulatingPersonal criticism, attacks, racist or sexist comment are not permittedEach member of the group is responsible for guaranteeing the ethos and the etiquetteWe work to ensure that our writers group operates as a peer support group offering mutual encouragementClick on the links below to access writers resources:-
